In this section I will introduce you to the wonders of written music, starting with the most basic things to Play on your Bass, open strings. I strongly urge every beginning Bassist to learn how to read. Not doing so will only shut you out of a great deal of information and knowledge. So the best way to start is to get used to looking at the music while you play some very simple exercises. Well learn to understand what the differences between whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, triplets and sixteenth notes are, and how to establish good practice habits to familiarize yourself with them. Ill also talk about the need to learn how to mute the strings that you are not playing and give you some tips to start working on. I will also give you some tips on right hand technique to help you get a nice consistent tone out of your Bass.

    It’s a matter of …
It’s a matter of opinion and comfort, really.

Personally, my opinion is playing sans pick. I absolutely hate picks, and I don’t think it makes it sound as clean as just finger picking. To me, picks are meant for guitars. But that’s me.

You won’t usually find jazz players or funk players playing with picks either. Though, picks are more common in rock, there are still lots of bassist who don’t use picks. IE; Flea, Les Claypool, Ben Kenney, etc.

    I play both …
I play both depending on the style and groove. I typically play ballads, or softer songs that have a whole, or half note approach with my fingers, and going into 16th and such, harder, heavier, metal, I use a pick. Honestly, it is comfort for YOU. What ever makes you rock out with ease, and having fun.

playin bass with a pick gives it a more marcato (loud and punctuated sound) and u play with fingers for legato. it is also somewhat of an unspoken rule among basses to never use a pick unless playing bass chords.
