DI Test For Electric Guitars
This video is the testing sample for kevinmundarai-san’s request.
He uses LINE6 POD XT.I don’t have it unfortunately. So I used LINE6 guitarPORT for sound source instead. It uses PC as effect-DSP and DAC is 44.1kHZ/16bits.
He’s considering AVALON DESIGN U5.But I thought some other DI should be added as samples to compare.
All DI were Plugged into RME Fireface800 and all the sources were recorded by LOGIC PRO7.2.
On Logic, added NO EFFECTS but only output level adjustment.
The guitar is my custom-made Strato with Bartolini pick-ups. Ash body and no tremolo unit.
All the sources were played on Rhythm pick-up(forward) and Lead pick-up(backward)
The followings are the Table of contents :
1:DIRECT FROM GUITARPORT CLEAN
Without DI,Direct to RME.
Amp-simulator : “59Tweed Bassman”
Gain=3,VOL=10,TONEs are all “5″(middle)
2:AVALON DESIGN U5 TONE=OFF CLEAN
(OFF=BYPASS)
3:AVALON DESIGN U5 TONE=3 CLEAN
U5 has 6Preset-Tone. I chose “3″ because it was natural.
4:RADIAL JDI MkIII
This is a passive DI with JENSEN transformer.Sometime transformers are useful for reducing Digitalness.
5.LR.BAGGS PARA ACOUSTIC DI ClEAN
This is for acoustic guitars. But I use it for E.Bass sometime.Much better than some Bass DI.
6:FULL TUBE DI CLEAN
This is really “just sample” Because this DI was discontinued and maybe hard to find the “USED”.
Named “Retrospec The Juice Box”.
7-12:”DRIVE” sounds. Amp-simulator is “‘68 Brit 50watt Plexi”(Marshall?)
Gain,VOL=10 TONEs=all 5
Duration : 0:8:18

@jinithith2 If you …
@jinithith2 If you play Rock,I recommend LR Baggs. Long ago I have compared LR Baggs with Fishman Bass DI when I was playing the bass. And got more bass with LR Baggs than Fishman.
JDI is nice for making the sounds clean. But not punchy.
Jensen transformer in JDI is great but small transformers make fat sounds skinny anyway.
That’s my opinion. Thank you!
@GOMENTE I haven’t …
@GOMENTE I haven’t bought one yet. still pondering the choice. I am looking to record acoustic guitar, electric guitar and electric bass
thanks a lot for the help man
@jinithith2 Sorry …
@jinithith2 Sorry for delay !!!
And which did you buy?
I can’t say which is better unless you tell me what you’re going to use them for.
I’m in the market …
I’m in the market for a DI, and I am trying to decide between the JDI and the LR Baggs both sampled here. which would you recommend?
Hi,this video was …
Hi,this video was posted two years ago and I no longer use it.
And GuitarPort is the legacy product. It was discontinued and the new product,POD Studio GX took that place.
And the software was replaced with the new version,POD Farm. I don’t have it and don’t know the details of the functions.
You want to use GuitarPort as an audio interface for the guitar? I think it was available but you better get POD Farm anyway.
Thanks.
Once I’ve made A-D …
Once I’ve made A-D converter with 50s UTC transformer for the front-end. The sounds were great. Though I don’t have that converter now,I still have the transformers.
Yes,Jensen is also nice.
Thanks for watching this.
great comparison. …
great comparison. I have done a very similar comparison on my own. This video reinforces my viewpoint on DI boxes. The Radial DI boxes have the MOJO! Its all about the transformers
Looks like some are …
Looks like some are good clean and some are good dirty. Avalon had some good clean tones, Radial owns for me on the dirty. I would trust that for reamping.
nice…thank you
nice…thank you
Hi. Please read my …
Hi. Please read my comment about this video.
I think people won’t use the configuration like this so often.
This testing was for another YT friend and he wanted to try the combination of POD and U5.
Thanks.
Thank you for …
Thank you for watching this.
Though I forgot the details because it is too old video,I think I connected Baggs’ XLR out to Fireface800. All the controls are same as usual E.guitar preamps.
Thank you

Wow that Line 6 sounds like shite….Baggs and Retrospec are awesome!!!
Once I have …
Once I have compared Baggs and Fishman bass pre for my Godin bass.
And Baggs was much better.
Baggs has great potential ability for expression,I think.
I have Aphex Bass-comp. Recent Aphex is doing good job about compact effects.
Thank you.
I liked the L.R. …
I liked the L.R. Baggs best in this review as well. It had the sweet spot. Sweet heaven. I might be forced to buy one now. I use Aphex acoustic xciter myself.
I heard FX Loop …
I heard FX Loop jack is not input jack. It is in/output jack.
Maybe the jack is 2 poles(stereo) jack.
So though you need special cable, you will be able to configure the effect loop. Please try it.
Thank you.
There is no “send” …
There is no “send” jack and “return” jack. Just one FX loop input jack.
I’m probably going to be real embarrassed when I find out what I’m missing. I must be missing something real simple
Thanks for replying
Thank you for …
Thank you for watching.
Though I don’t know my understanding is correct or not,LR Baggs has FX Loop jack. Doesn’t it satisfy your requirement?
Thank you so much!!
Good stuff! For my …
Good stuff! For my money, I like the Baggs overall. But then I’m partial because I already have one. I never thought to use it for anything but accoustic as I have tube amps for electric. I am considering it for a pre-amp to an 8 watt tube head I use to give me a little more headroom. I would also use the effects loop if I could figure out how. It only has 1 input (not a “loop”). Any ideas? This is a very helpful video. Thanks.
Yes,that is nice. I …
Yes,that is nice. I have it. The black-faced one.
But it is not DI.
get a hughes and …

Yes,If it is for …
Yes,If it is for recording.
But we should imagine that sounds come from speakers on the stage.
That is what my friend expected.
I didn’t add any EQ. so it maybe in the process of Guitarport.
Hmmm.. they all …
Hmmm.. they all sound like a directly recorded guitar to me- especially with the distortion
things have gotten better over the years, but still nothing beats a mic in front of a real speaker ..yet
perhaps with a little EQing you could get some of that brittle high end out of there
At this testing, …
At this testing, using mic and amp should not be discussed.
About the purpose of this testing, please see the “About this video”.
Radial is very clean. Little bit skinny though. I understand some people choose Radial. But my choice is different.
Thanks.
