What types of scales should i work with? How often should i practice? Any good websites that you can think of that would help me learn? Thanks!

*hammer-ons and pull-offs
*quick strumming patterns
*power-chords, and being able to quickly change from different ones (this is easier when playing in Drop-D)
*playing in different tuning (besides standard, the most common for heavy metal are Drop-D and Drop-C)

Well , depends on which "Metal" you speak of. If your after metal of today , you just need to learn to tune down to low C and just play "Root / Fifth / Octave" power chords, if you wanna sing as well , watch Sesame Street's "Cookie Monster" for that essential current metal vocal, and remember – in todays metal , it's more important to have a "look" than to be able to play well. If you want to be able to play well, you should try to learn as many scales as you can. Also, practice as much as you feel comfortable with devoting to the guitar. You won't get any better without regular practice. Chord shapes won't be as important as becoming proficient at playing in different time signatures and strumming patterns when playing metal. Also, even if you want to play heavy metal, you should try to practice with a relatively clean tone, so that you can keep track of your progress and learn to correct your mistakes.
