Part 2 of my extremely quick guide to changing the strings to a different gauge on a guitar with a floyd rose tremolo. Should explain how to Change the strings easily and how to reset the bridge so that it sits flat. Hope you enjoy.
i tuned as high as … i tuned as high as i could without the plyers until i was starting to feel an extreme amount of tension on the strings. i could barely even bend them. and the strings were still touching the 23rd and 24th frets.
so you’ve tuned the … so you’ve tuned the guitar up with the plyers still under the bridge? And you’re wondering why this is different when you remove them?
If you followed the vid you can see I remove the plyers before tuning up for the first time… there isn’t any point in tuning up with the plyers still under the bridge if you’re just going to remove them is there?
so i followed your … so i followed your instructions and all the strings on my guitar are perfectley in tune and everything is working fine except for one thing. whenever i remove the plyers from under the bridge the strings touch the 23rd and 24th fret so i cant even hear the strings play. i even adjusted it to where the floyd was perfectly flat and even, still the same thing. but when i put the plyers back under the bridge the strings play perfectly in tune again. any suggestions?
I didn’t talk about adjusting the bridge height because it was literally just resetting it from changing string gauge… I guess I could do another video.
There is no such … There is no such thing as a pre-made set that starts on 16 but there is nothing stopping you putting a 16 on the high end if you wanted…
16, 20, 24, 36, 50, 64 would work nicely for something like standard A
you need to bear in … you need to bear in mind that there are studs which will be under much more (side-)pressure with a gauge not intended to be used on a particular guitar – you might even break something.. next thing is what your neck can handle – really thick strings can wreck your guitar neck.. + you can damage your tremolo knives.. i think FR is made for 9, 10 or possibly 11, but more? i wouldn’t dare.. it’s up to you although
haha woops
well
… haha woops
well
how about some 14s then
cause i kno for a fact daddario makes 14s
and
haha sorry about all the qts but…
why cant certain guitars take certain gauges?
(we all gotta learn somwhere, sometime right?)
haha duude i never … haha duude i never sign into youtube but i felt obliged to thank you…you helped me out alot here, haha i was wondering why my floyd was like at a 90 degree angle…i knew there was too much tension on my strings but i didnt kno how to release that tension – thanks alot dude
oh but i hav a question, when i bought my guitar (B.C. Rich Beast) they gave me an extra spring – when would i use another spring?
Hey, I liked your … Hey, I liked your video, I understand how the tremolo works now. But I still cant get mine in tune, which is bad for saying I have had the guitar for 2 years now.
You said, that I need to get the strings so they are almost in tune, but when I do that, I get to low E and the whole set is out again. It seems no matter how hard I turn the screws in the back the bridge is alwasy sitting a good 1-2 cms off the body. I have tried adding another spring, and that just makes the spring tension too…
nice but you;ve not … nice but you;ve not talked about adjusting action – which allen key do i need to set the bridge height – adjusting those pivot studs|?
dude you have to be … dude you have to be careful with truss rod adjustments. Put the action back to where you want it, as in lower the bridge back down on the bolts.
Detune the guitar a little to slacken the strings off, not massively but a bit.
After that, loosen the truss rod (looking at guitar turn bolt counter clockwise, left). Turn it no more than 1 complete turn without leaving the guitar to settle for an hour.
The neck needs to have enough bow in it so that the strings don’t buzz with a low action. GL.
hey man i hav a … hey man i hav a jackson thats had only one string change from new, played sweet b4 hand with 9 gauge strings put a fresh deck of 9′s on bridge is floating flush to the body but now i got a whole lota buzz so i tried adjusting the truss rod but cant rid the buzz even if the action is really high ???
This is a great … This is a great video – every step is explained very well!! I switched to a floyd rose guitar (ESP M-II) recently and I have to get used to the different process of restringing the guitar. I tried 9-46 gauge strings but as I play heavy stuff I decided to order some 10-52 strings. I will have a look at your video again when restringing it Thanks for sharing the information!
if u change gauge, … if u change gauge, like i want to use 12′s for C standard, would i need to worry about the neck at all if i level out the spring tension
i baught it in 2007 … i baught it in 2007 used got a good deal but later on its been having problems ive got it fixed twice but the one day i was fixing the tension from the strings and the wood look like it was sorta stripped so i tried to be carfull and the screws both ripped out of the body so i put longer ones in but now to this day it sits in my room with no strings cuz i need to buy a new tremolo set cuz the pins are striped so i cant set the action height

high, and then I end up taking it out again. I got 3 springs atm, and that is all I have ever had.
Everytime I take it to the guitar shop he does it fine, but never tells me how.
