Learning to play the acoustic guitar is great. Acoustic guitars bring the notion of uniqueness to a whole new level. Just give it a go and you will see. Just to see what you look like holding one. You are convinced that if you have the time to Learn, you would be fine? You do not know whether it’s easy or hard to play the acoustic guitar but you have a musical ear? It’s time for you to take the step and begin your musical journey.

It is some achievement to Learn to play the acoustic guitar and most of my friends who have never tried it do not know where to start. It is as if they were getting all shy when seeing one. When you start playing your first notes, you feel like there is no limit to it. It is only a mental cap to pass. Being able to step out of the comfort zone to challenge yourself is something you can do too.

However, just keep one thing in mind: learning to play the acoustic guitar is not similar to magic. When you pick up a new language at school, you go through this period of assimilating new rules and new patterns. At the beginning you find it hard and then, little by little, you become more comfortable with the tools you possess. Then, you start broadening and improving your range of vocabulary, expressions and sentence structures. The same is true with learning to play the acoustic guitar

Once you’ve got the idea of how to play basic notes and -hopefully not long after- how to read guitar tabs, do a web search for easy acoustic guitar tabs and pick out a very basic song that you know well and play around with it. Although reading and playing acoustic guitar tabs does take some getting used to, you’ll be surprised how quickly you can learn to play the acoustic guitar.

If you have a favorite song, being able to hear the song that you’re working on always makes it easier to learn. Even if you think you remember how it goes, listening to it while you’re learning it will help you with rhythm and detail.

Keep in mind that acoustic guitars were created to be played. There are a lot of easy songs you can learn, whether it is from The Eagles, James Taylor or Joni Mitchell. You will never regret the decision you have made to learn to play the acoustic guitar.

this is how i first learned, then i took lessons http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dSp79TDWoc

also, learn how to read guitar tabs, and chords, then go to http://ultimate-guitar.com/
you can search any songs or scales, or even chords and learn how to play them.
its not that hard to teach yourself, if you play a stringed instrument or an instrument with your fingers moving. that’s how when i started, i started out fast, i played the viola and keyboard.
you can also get a book to learn how to read tabs or on the staff.
this also might be a helpful site http://www.guitarinstructor.com/
i hope this helps and good luck =]

You have a many options to learning the guitar "on your own".

    Books
    DVD’s
    Online Lesson’s

Books are a great resource but with all the new technology out there why read when you can watch and see exactly how it’s done.

DVD’s are the next best choice. Due to the new technology that has recently come out instructors can literally give you a private lesson right in the comfort of your own living room. You will see everything from close-ups of chord constructions to detailed explanations of rhythm techniques. From thsi perspective the benefits of guitar lessons on dvd are immensely valuable.

The negatives are that you are limited to only the lessons given on the DVD. Usually there are no printed manual of exercises or lessons and you don’t have access to a "live" person if you need to ask questions or clarify something. And finally when you are finished and want to learn something new you have to go out an buy another DVD.

Online lessons are my top choice. Online lessons give you all the benefits of lessons on DVD while virtually eliminating the disadvantages. With most you get all the lessons in book format in addition to all the audio and video lessons. Hundreds of lines of tabulature, and many bonuses like books or computer games developed to enhance your learning and to make it fun at the same time. And they also provide their students with the opportunity for free e-mail consultations to deal with any specific problems students may have. These online learning systems are designed to make the learning process for guitar students as simple and effective as possible. And it’s really fun and easy to use!

So which one to choose, well there are thousands of free lesson all over the internet and on You Tube and I would advise you do a search and start with these before you spend your hard earned money. That is what I did when I first started learning. Only after I felt I needed more instruction and wanted to move ahead did I start spending money on Online Lessons (which were fantastic by the way).

Teaching your self is pretty easy – it just takes time & a willingness to practice. In the beginning it helps if you are playing music that you like – other posters have provided great sites – you should find plenty of nice & easy arrangement there.

It usually takes a couple of weeks to get some easy chords together.

Then a couple of months of about 1hr a day practicing to be able play some more complex songs.

Give yourself about 6 months of 1hr a day practicing to be able to string together a little nice sounding lead guitar. GarageBand on the mac is great for recording yourself – you can layer some multi-track rythym & leads really easily.

Don’t expect to play like chet atkins or eric clapton in 6 months, those guys have spent most of their lives practicing. But after that you should now be start attacking some more complex stuff.

    Good luck & have fun.
