When I just started playing guitar years ago I found myself hitting some plateaus. The first one was getting my hands used to pressing down the strings and forming chords. Then the next obstacle to overcome was chord changes followed by rhythm and timing.

Also it is not easy practicing all of the time especially when you have a busy schedule. But keep in mind that practicing every day for ten or fifteen minutes will help you get better than having a long practice session one day and then take the next few days off.

A very common thing I see beginner guitar players do is spend most of their time looking up tabs for guitar songs. There is nothing wrong with learning songs by looking up the sheet music at first. But at some point you will want to transcribe music or in another words learn by ear.

I had a tough time breaking the habit of looking up guitar tabs for this song and that song. I mean trying to learn songs by ear is difficult at first. But it will pay off big time once you get it down. Trust me playing guitar becomes a lot more fun once you can listen to any song and play along to it on guitar.

This tutorial shows a way to brighten the guitar, add more punch and bring the guitar out to the front of the mix. Since most distorted guitars already have consistent levels, there’s no need to to even them out.

In general, adding compression to a track is a bit like cooking using salt. Use small amounts to change the flavor slowly, tasting as you go, rather than just dumping in a lot and then tasting it.

Directions

1. To start, open your electric guitar track in a Pro Tools session. Solo it out and then play it, so that you can hear what you’re working with. The track has already been EQ’d, but with compression, you can make it even brighter.

2. Select the default compressor plug-in insert, opening the compressor window.

If you prefer, you can now select the Fatten preset, because usually producers try to make the guitar sound thicker. The ratio is so high in this that it’s almost like a limiter, which you’ll learn more about later in this chapter.

When compressing, we recommend setting the compressor up manually instead of using a preset.

Start by raising the threshold to -3.9 dB. Watch the IN level bar. In this video, it’s going from around -12 to -15. It’s a small distance, because the compression pedal already helped out. Set your threshold to -17.1 dB.

3. Try keeping the knee at 0.00 dB. Set a low ratio like 3.0 :1 or 2.0 : 1. Speed up the attack to 16.9 us and the release to 210.5 ms. Raise the gain to 4.0 dB. The OUT level bar will now hover around -12.

4. Finally, compare the compressed track to the original by first playing the compressed version. Click Bypass to temporarily remove the compression, then click it once more to hear the compressed version again. If it sounds punchier, you’ve mixed it well.

The body is made from contoured laminate flamed Maple with a North American 22 fret hard Maple set neck and the now legendary Hagstrom “Resinator” fret board with Pearl block position markers. It also features the H-style light alloy truss rod that allows the Viking to have an ultra-thin neck and low action. At each side of the body is a single “f” style sound hole one of which is slightly covered by the black plastic floating scratch plate.

The pick up configuration utilises two Hagstrom HJ-50 hum-buckers that are also deployed on the HJ500 Jazz model, these pick-ups have a beautiful tone and can be EQ’d to suit Jazz, Blues and rock tones. The pick-ups, die-cast machine heads, tune-o-matic bridge and decorative Trapeze tail-piece are all chrome plated.

The pick-ups are managed via 2 volume and 2 tone knobs and are selected via a 3-way toggle switch that sits at the upper shoulder of the guitar adjacent to the left hand cut-away. Finished in a gorgeous Tobacco Sunburst with chrome hardware.
