Jimmy Page 1972 audio: Evolution of 1960s Guitar
Hear, if you can, Jimmy talk about:
- Bert Jansch at 0:05;
- Davey Graham at 0:25;
- Donovan at 1:24;
- the sitar at 1:50;
- John Martyn at 2:30;
- Ravi Shankar at 2:50;
- George Harrison at 3:37;
- Albert Lee at 4:08;
- Steve Howe at 5:32; and
- John McLaughlin at 6:01.
… the whole “evolution” of modern guitar playing.
It a pity about the sound quality, though – I’ve tried processing it twice (including speed adjustments) to make it more intelligible. Go to sugermegs, if you want the whole 2+ hour (and quite inaudible) talk.
But don’t be afraid to pitch in on your understanding, or comments, of what’s being discussed here – it’s quite interesting. Though I bet most guitarists will be too hung up on the “official canon” of guitar playing to appreciate it all at once.
Page’s description of John McLaughlin is particularly apt – aspects of John’s musical development remain a mystery (even to me). Though Page never really went psychedelic, either.

This solo starts really simple but at the the end i speed it up a little bit.My early influences are too strong.
Here i use a lot of different techniques.
-Pinch Harmonics
-simple pull offs ala Jimmy Page
-Double Stops
-simple Bendings
-Legatoarpeggios with some Tapping
-Tapping with the pick ala Joe Satriani
-Fast picking ala Tony McAlpine/Petrucci
-sweeping ala Yngwie Malmsteen
-big streching ala Richie Kotzen.
The whole solo is improvised but i wanted it to sound more structured.
Hope you have some fun with this crazy little solo.

Guitar Standard Tuning
PLEASE CLICK MORE INFO AND READ THIS
Standard Tuning E,B,G,D,A,e
The guitar isn’t out of tune so don’t say it is. I used a tuner while making this video and I used one after the video was made. I would know if it was out of tune. I play several instruments… Guitar, bass, drums, trumpet, banjo, and the piano/keyboard. Everyone in my family plays an instrument. And I am in a band. I am around music 24/7…
Okay, don’t complain about the distortion and blame the distortion for you tuning your guitar wrong. YOU tuned your own guitar wrong. Just practice a bit more and suck it up. If you have trouble because of the distortion then just use a tuner. Not a big deal. And if you’re holding a tuner to your speaker checking my video to see if I was in tune….. Why aren’t you using your tuner on your own guitar and then you at me for tuning your guitar wrong. Not my fault, not the distortions fault, and it’s not YouTube’s fault… It’s your fault.
The video is marked as xREDxGUYx at the end. Don’t say this isn’t my video because it is!!! xREDxGUYx is my old youtube account which I deleted. So please don’t try it!
